I'm looking for an inexpensive way to bring my Mac IIci up to speed (i.e. an accelerator). DayStar's Turbo 601 (and the cost of native PowerPC software) is a little out of my price range, although I wouldn't mind hearing about it. I'm particularly considering the DiiMOCache 50Mhz 68030 accelerator. Anyone have experience with this board or other suggestions? Is the remaining hardware in my IIci (RAM, SCSI, etc.) going to be a setback? Are the latest versions of Photoshop, Quark and system software going to run smoothly? Thanks in advance. Daystar is DEFINITELY the way to go. Besides the fact that their compatibility is virtually 100% with everything, they've always had an upgrade program whereby you were credited the full list price of your current accelerator towards a new accelerator. I'm running a IIsi with a 33Mhz 68LC040 DayStar and it's virtually indistinguishable from my Quadra 630 in terms of real world performance (using Filemaker, MacTCP & Word). Given the current prices on accelerators (not to mention Macs) you would probably be better off going with a 33 Mhz 68040 or LC040 rather than with a 50Mhz 68030. A IIci is a great machine to accelerate since it's got 3 NuBus slots and doesn't require a special adaptor from DayStar to use their accelerators. ------------------------------------------------------------- Peter Kapner pkap@panix.com -------------------------------------------------------------

I think this is a perfect example of "you get what you pay for". DayStar is able to charge more for their products precisely because people are willing to pay more. They know the brand name, and what comes with it: reliability, compatabililty, and support. So why *should* DayStar charge less; the objective isn't to have the lowest price -- it's to make the most money. -- David Schmitt Kellogg Graduate School of Management Georgia Tech '87

I put a 33mhz 68040 in my Mac IIci, and it doesn't seem to be making any difference! The program in which I was hoping to see improvement is Adobe Illustrator, but it's still as slow as ever. (Yes, I have Power Central turned on...) The new card does not have a math coprocessor. Could this be the problem? I hope someone can help, or I just wasted a lot of money. -- Kristin ---------------------------------------------------- kmount@miso.wwa.com Collect call from hell, will you accept the charges? ----------------------------------------------------
