Unless, of course, USENET was being used by private investigators and 
skip-tracers.  One has no way of knowing if the posting is from a 
legitimate familly member.

In this instance, since the poster asked that the police be notified, it 
would seem to be legitimate. BTW, I would probably notify the police 
before notifying the familly member, the person might have left 
willingly. If that is the case, the police department can notify the 
familly that the person is well and still protect the privacy of the 
individual. It is not against the law for a person to leave home and not 
want to be contacted by other familly members.
