I may have a minority opinion here, but it seems to me that in America,
the people get the government they deserve, i.e., vote for. DC's
ridiculous governance, for example, is largely the responsibility of
the corrupt/stupid/evil/ignorant/pick-your-negative electorate in the
District. The current City Paper has an illustrative "Loose Lips"
article on the incredible crap Barry has offered to excuse his personal
conduct over the years (make that decades!). If the public buys it,
it buys it.
While there are certainly distorting factors, such as media bias and
information control, big money - both private and commercial, and
single-issue fanaticism, we nevertheless live in a republican
democracy with a basic winner-take-all political system. The people,
including the people in DC, have the precious ability to throw the bums
out, but often they won't.
I suspect that the real reason is that the pain level isn't high
enough. When it is, you'll see real change. When all of those
twenty-something suckers wake up to what is really happening to
them under the current Social Security/Medicaid/Medicare generational
scam, I suspect you'll see some real change. When DC residents
finally realize what a sham our "criminal justice" system has become,
particularly for "youths" who pack guns, steal cars, burn buildings,
etc., there will be some substantial change. It's all gonna happen,
folks. The only question is how long will it take, and how high
will the price be.
It would be nice to change the whining tone of this newsgroup into
something more positive, such as concrete proposals on how to actually
improve things.
How about a dc.crime home page from our police - where citizens
could get data on outstanding crimes, report problems, track court
cases and judicial decision, etc.
What do you think?
Dan
