In article <uA6zxgiGkAQW088yn@en.com>, Lou Duchez <ljduchez@en.com> wrote: >from another perspective, faith in the ultimate fairness of the system >is comforting: "If Ed got downsized, it must have been because he wasn't >a hard worker, but I'm a hard worker so it'll never happen to me." First of all "the system" does not exist. Employment is a free association between employees and employers. If an employee wants to quit, he simply gives notice and leaves. Likewise if an employer wants to lay someone off there is no reason why he should not be able to. There is no "system" here -- it is just individuals exercising their freedom of association. You can disagree with individuals about the reasons for downsizing and so on, but there is no system to speak of except excessive limitations on liberty and freedom created by the government, the only entity with the power to coerce. By definition, *anything* the government does infringes on someone's freedom. The question is to what extent is depriving people of freedom both necessary and effective to ensure domestic peace and tranquility. In today's society, most government programs are neither necessary or effective. Many believe that many of these programs, are not only wasteful but destructive as well. Read "Losing Ground", by Charles Murray and "Wealth and Poverty", by George Gilder and you will get a very clear picture of what I am talking about. - Mark Butler -- Mark David Butler ( butlerm @ xmission.com )
