i recently got around to taking defensive driver training (at last.)
it was well worth it, if for no other reason than than because
for $40 and a Saturday, my insurance goes down by 10% for the next
three years.

i'm posting for two reasons:

1) the training should be worthwhile for nearly every driver out
   there, no matter how good they are (i've been heavily trained
   in various high performance schools, but still found out some
   things i didn't know in this course.)  one particular note of
   interest is that statistics collected over the years show that
   graduates of defensive driving training are in the aggregate 15%
   less likely to be involved in accidents.

2) the courses do vary in quality quite a bit, i'm told, and the
   one i took happened to be one of the better ones.  the Capital
   District contact is Richard Ellis, 518-765-4011; DTA offers
   courses in most of upstate New York and he should be able to
   point people at them (i did disagree with certain points in
   his presentation relating to speed limits, but kept this disagreement
   to myself.  other than that the presentation was generally right on
   target in my view.)
