Not wanting to appear a smartass here Jeffrey, do you know why many Jews ended up with surnames which were the same as the names of precious metals (e.g. Gold and Gold- berg, stein, farb, blatt, etc., and Silver or Silver- berg, stein, man, etc.) and gems and gemstones (i.e. Diamond, Sapphire <other spellings>, Ruby, etc.)? And I forgot Pearl (sometimes spelled Perl). Really, I'd sincerely like to know. It has crossed my mind a couple of times, but I've never given it that much thought. -- Regards, IM
