Please forgive the snip, but this is getting too long: the record of
previous posts is still upthread......

Yes it does: a free press is essential to a well informed electorate

even when it may interfere with rescue and recovery

They brought their own resources, and did not interfere with rescue or
recovery.

CNN had to resort to the courts to gain access to the recovery efforts.

Seen a wide variety of reports from the media. Do not think

Most are mouthpieces for the staus quo ( thanks to deregulation and
consolidation into giant conglomerations under the control of a few
Executive Producers.. Having been a line producer, I tell you that the
management calls the shots, and the producers
hew to that position, or they are removed. Some are aware of the fact that
their independence has been curtailed, but ambition and the need for the
paycheck ( as well as informal blacklisting ) tends to remove all but the
most pliable from positions of power.

The FEMA needed local permission BULL is blown away by their own rules

The December 2004 National Response Plan (NRP), the federal Department
of Homeland Security's (DHS) most recent plan for coordinated federal
response to disasters
http://mediamatters.org/rd?http://www.dhs.gov/interweb/... , confirms the
Red Cross' status as a "primary agency"
http://mediamatters.org/items/200509090002#establishes
that will, under the oversight of FEMA and DHS, coordinate "federal
mass care resources" to affected areas. Moreover, in a "catastrophic event,"
such as what befell New Orleans, the NRP directs FEMA
http://mediamatters.org/items/200509090002#directs
to act on its own authority to quickly provide assistance and conduct
emergency operations, bypassing state and local authorities if necessary.

Thanks, and I now wish to offer my sincere apology to you for the slurs and
angry allegations I have directed at you. I will now save that shit for the
' You MORON! '
posters. You appear to be willing to think and argue intelligently, and it
is this kind of discourse that will allow the nation to change the debate
from screaming opinions and misdirection to thoughful and thought-provoking
discussion. That is the basis for democracy.

Again, my apology for my hot-headed knee-jerk reaction to your differing
opinions.
