Sounds like you have a 'jack-point' system with presumably either one
permanently-wired phone or a fixed bell-set. If it is properly wired, the
line connections should be green & white. Red is a parallel 'capacitor'
circuit & blue is a series 'bell' circuit which is connected to green at the
end jackpoint. This is different from a single phone connection, which uses
red & white for the line, as above (don't ask why :-).
From memory, the line connections are the outermost two on the jackpoint.
Don't use a master socket, just connect the new phone to the old 'line'.
(Unless a modern-type telecom techo says otherwise, I believe this would add
capacitance where it's not needed, the present setup is already wired to
provide the correct amount)
PS. The jackpoint phones have their capacitors disconnected, except for one
(either the fixed phone or the bellset), hence the red wire which 'shares'
it around all the others. Modern phones don't have any, so the master socket
provides it instead.
