Some kid wiped nearly every bit of info off my mother's 486, and I'm stuck with fixing it :) It orginally had Windows 95 and a CDROM drive that worked fine... Now I can only get as far as the DOS prompt... So I've got her orginal Windows 95 CDROM, and downloaded the original CDROM drivers off the Net (it's a Goldstar x4, SoundBlaster compatiable)... Problem is that I can't get DOS to recognise the CD-ROM drive, so I can't install windows... I keep getting the message "MSCD001 not found" Any help or tips would be much appreciated... Thanks -- Zef eMail zef@zefamedia.co.nz

Your config.sys should have a line that looks like this (substitute your own CD driver): DEVICEHIGH=C:\CDPRO\VIDE-CDD.SYS /D:MSCD001 Your autoexec.bat should have a line that looks like this: LH C:\DOS\MSCDEX /D:MSCD001 /V -- Beware of the Spam-Dog

Download Microsoft super-cool CDROM boot disk from http://www.computer123.com/drivers/boot98.zip It contains a wee proggy that will detect whatever CDROM you have, and load the appropriate real-mode drivers. I've used it on all sorts of drives. Cheers Nathan -- Nathan Mercer MCSE+Internet Technical Consultant Christchurch, New Zealand

If not: config.sys: --------------- device=c:\mtmcdai.sys /D:XXX autoexec.bat: ------------------- c:\mscdex.exe /D:XXX /M:10 XXX can be any name, but it has to be the same name as you assigned it to the driver in config.sys You can also add /L:<letter> to mscdex to manualy assign drive letter for cd-rom drive (beware of LASTDRIVE value), if omitted, cd-rom has the next available letter after all fixed drives had been assigned. For example - all IDE and SCSI disks or even removable SyQuest if you mounted it as non-removable. Hope this'll help.
