UUASC
UNIX Users Association of Southern California
July Meeting
-------------------------------------------------
Leveraging an Intranet on Internet Technologies
-------------------------------------------------
Monday, July 8, 7-9 pm
Corollary Inc
2802 Kelvin, Irvine
(one block north of Jamboree and Main)
Once upon a time, we had local area networks (LANs). Now we have intranets.
The difference appears to be that LANs were based on proprietary products
while intranets use the open standards of the Internet. For a long time,
the undisputed champion of LANs was Novell Netware. Now Novell has turned
to the Internet, as have nearly all other LAN vendors. For the UUASC July
meeting, Robert Sale from Novell will discuss Internet and intranet
applications. He will focus on how such applications work with system
resources such as Sun Microsystems's Java and Novell's NDS (originally
Netware Directory Services, but sometimes called just Novell Directory
Services or Network Directory Services).
For our August meeting on the 12th, we expect Silicon Graphics to make a
presentation. Watch for an announcement. The UUASC Program Committee is
looking for a few good members to join the committee and help to plan other
great programs for future meetings. If you are interested, send a note to
Mike Elliott at mre@lpf.org.
The UUASC is for all persons using UNIX either personally or professionally,
or interested in learning more about UNIX. We recognize all varieties of
UNIX, including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, and OSF.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden your
skills and knowledge. Generally, meetings include a technical presentation
on a hardware or software topic of current interest to the UNIX community
and a round-table discussion of current topics of interest to the group.
We are always looking for interesting presentations and your suggestions
are most welcome.
Please join us this month and bring along your friends or co-workers. Also,
please forward this announcement to others who may be interested and feel
free to post it on BBSs, both electronic and physical. If you receive more
than one announcement by email, please let us know so we can keep our lists
current. Thanks for listening.
