UUASC
UNIX Users Association of Southern California
June Meeting
----------------
Cryptography
----------------
Monday, June 12, 7-9 pm
Graphix Zone
38 Corporate Park #100, Irvine
(southeast of Jamboree and Barranca)
Cryptography is the science of hiding information in plain sight. Algorithms
ranging from the trivial ROT13 to the first-rate PGP are commonly used on
UNIX systems for concealing messages, authentication, and integrity checking.
For June, UUASC member and cryptography hobbiest Matt Bartley will bring us
up-to-date on this fascinating subject.
Matt will cover crypto history, modern block ciphers such as DES and IDEA,
crypt(1), hash functions such as crypt(3) and MD5, UNIX passwords, and
public key systems such as RSA and Diffie-Hellman. PGP will be used as an
example of several of the above concepts. The strengths and weaknesses of
this excellent email encryption and authentication program will be explained.
If time permits, more advanced topics such as digital cash, anonymous proof
of credentials, zero disclosure proofs of knowledge, and steganography may
be touched upon.
The UUASC is for all persons using UNIX either personally or professionally,
or interested in learning more about UNIX. We recognize all varieties of
UNIX, including (without prejudice) SCO, Linux, SVr4, Solaris, AIX, and OSF.
This is a good place to meet others with similar interests and broaden your
skills and knowledge. Generally, meetings include a technical presentation
on a hardware or software topic of current interest to the UNIX community
and a round-table discussion of current topics of interest to the group.
Please join us this month and bring along your friends or co-workers. Also,
please forward this announcement to others who may be interested and feel
free to post it on BBSs, both electronic and physical. If you receive more
than one announcement by email, please let us know so we can keep our lists
current. Thanks for listening.
