Longmont United Hospital is on track this year to provide about $25 million worth of health care to people who can't or won't pay, up from about $21.3 million in 2005. Of that care, $7.7 million worth - about 30 percent - will go to people who lack a valid Social Security number, the hospital reported. In 2005, $3.6 million in care was given to people without valid documentation. And the amount of free care given to those without proper documentation has leapt 1,620 percent from 2002 to today, In 2002, LUH provided just $448,000 in care to people without documentation, the hospital reported. While health-care costs are a struggle for many employers and families, they are felt acutely by LUH, which as a nonprofit hospital cannot turn away patients. That means it must care for anyone who needs help in an emergency or giving birth. LUH officials embrace that role in the community, but they say it's getting harder and harder to meet the city's needs. LUH says it is "dedicated to improving the health of our patients and the communities we serve." The hospital earlier this year broke ground on a $12 million emergency department expansion. Space will jump from 9,800 to 25,000 square feet, allowing LUH to log 45,000 visits annually versus the current 26,000 visits, officials said in starting construction. "It's our absolute obligation to take care of these people," said Mitch Carson, the hospital's CEO. "It's absolutely something we have to do." LUH's emergency department is often the last resort for local residents who can't get or don't have health insurance through their job. But experts say it's far cheaper to give people routine health care to ward off or manage major problems, rather than dealing with catastrophic illnesses and injuries in an emergency. Because the hospital deals with Medicare and Medicaid payments, it tracks the Social Security numbers of patients, if they have them. It also tracks where its patients say they live. According to hospital records, 80 percent of the charity care is provided to people who live in a Longmont ZIP code, most in 80501, but also 80504 and 80502. That means the hospital is not drawing patients to it for out of town; they are already here. Free or unreimbursed care is a problem for hospitals all over Colorado, Colorado Hospital Association spokeswoman Marty Arizumi said. She said there's been industry discussion that new state laws requiring anyone receiving state services to provide proof of legal residency may end up driving illegal immigrants away from getting routine health care such as flu shots. That means people may get sicker and seek emergency care at hospitals that are legally obligated to care for them. Because there is no such thing as "free" health care, hospitals and insurers charge paying customers more to make up some of the shortfall. "There is concern in the community at large that more people are going to be driven into the hospitals," Arizumi said. (Denver Post-11-20-06) 2) Longmont United Hospital says it is expecting to spend $7.7 million on health care for people with fake or nonexistent Social Security numbers...In 2002, the hospital says it spent more than $400,000 on care for patients without documentation. In 2005, the hospital says that number jumped to more than $3 million. This year, the hospital says that number is expected to more than double. However, few businesses, let alone the hospital industry, can offer anything for free. (CBS 4 news, 11-27-06) > 4) On average, illegal households pay more than $4,200 a year in all forms of federal taxes. Unfortunately, they impose costs of $6,950 per household. Among the largest costs are Medicaid ($2.5 billion); treatment for the uninsured ($2.2 billion); food assistance programs such as food stamps, WIC, and free school lunches ($1.9 billion); the federal prison and court systems ($1.6 billion); and federal aid to schools ($1.4 billion).
