hi everyone, couple of weeks ago i'd posted a query regarding scenic spots in columbus. a number of people made follow up posts or sent me email and i'm including below a summary of the suggestions made. some of these locations may not be considered by everyone as "scenic"; however i've included all the suggestions received, along with any road directions that were given, or that i know of. A suggestion was made that this topic (scenic spots..) belonged to osu.opinion rather than osu.general. Since the original posts were made on osu.general (and cmh.general), this summary post is being made to the same newsgroups. also, based on the nomenclature of the newsgroups, this topic is more appropriate for osu.general rather than osu.opinion, IMHO. /manpreet s. wadhwa A list of some scenic spots in and around columbus (no particular order) ------------------------------------------------------------------------- -> Hoover Dam Park - up 270 east and 161 new albany. there is also a frisbee golf course at this location. -> Blendon Woods -> Highbanks Park (north columbus) -> Park of Roses (north columbus) -> Antrim Park (go north on olentangy river rd., go past bethel <about a mile>, take a right at the stoplight.) -> Downtown Worthington -> Downtown Columbus, by the river, esp. at night (marconi boulevard; it is a one way street, going south). -> German Village and Brewery District near downtown columbus -> Riverside Drive (route 33. there are plenty of nice views of the scioto along this drive, also there is a small park next to the river: if you're going south, take a right turn at the stoplight after fishinger) -> Route 257, route 42, Klondike road. (continuation of riverside drive towards the north of columbus, along the east bank of scioto river). -> 315 north, beyond the point where it turns from a freeway to a two lane rd. -> Chestnut Ridge Park. (take 33 south [east]. 13.7 miles after crossing 270, take a right onto winchester road. 2.8 miles down this road take a left. -> Hocking Hills, Buckeye Lake, Cuyahoga Valley (these spots are somewhat away from columbus) -> Franklin Park Conservatory. -> Perkins Observatory -> Darby Downs (south of columbus) -> Chadwick Arboretum (OSU campus) -> Come to think of it, mirror lake and the oval area look pretty nice too, maybe it's just that familiarity breeds contempt... -> Dawes Arboretum - take exit for SR13 from 70 east. -> Jeffery Mansion (in Bexley) -> Iuka Ravine (between Indianola and 4th St, south of lane ave) -> Glen Echo Ravine (West of Indianola, somewhat north of campus: iuka and glen echo ravines run parallel). thanks to the following people who made suggestions: Kathleen Treole Steen H Hviid Luis J Olivieri Denny E. Miller Robert W. Spencer Kim L. Toms William Thomas Powers David A. Culberson Jim Jaime A. Giordano Henry Ware
