Sounds like you're (gosh) running out of memory. :-) There's two
scenarios here:

1) You don't have enough memory to properly run Word:

Note that certain parts of the operating system (various fonts, QuickTime,
and the like) won't load into memory until they're needed - which can
increase memory consumption.

Start up your Mac, then go to the "About This Macintosh" item under the
Apple Menu. Look to see what the largest free block value is. Write it
down.

Find the icon for MS Word. Select it (single-click, not double), then
select Get Info from the File Menu. Look at the memory settings. These
should be _smaller_ than the "largest free block" value from above.
There's a suggested setting, minimum setting, and preferred setting.
Minimum should _never_ be less than suggested.

Now run Word. With Word running, switch back to the Finder, and go to the
"About This Macintosh" item under the Apple Menu. Are there free blocks
left over? If yes, go to scenario 2). If not, then running out of memory
is the problem. Possibible solution include: removing unnecessary
extensions/control panels, using Virtual Memory, using RAMDoubler,
upgrading your physical RAM.

2) You don't have enough memory allocated to Word.

If you _do_ have a decent number of free blocks (at least several hundred
Kb) when running both the Finder and Word, then you need to allocate more
memory to Word:

Quit Word.

Find the icon for MS Word. Select it (single-click, not double), then
select Get Info from the File Menu. Look at the memory settings. Increase
the "preferred" setting by about 512k. It should still be _smaller_ than
the "largest free block" value from above. Try running Word again, and see
if that helps.

GENERAL NOTES:

If at all possible, you should have at least 16MB of PHYSICAL RAM in any
Power Macintosh (61xx, 62xx, 52xx, 53xx, 7100, 7200, 7500, 8100, 8500,
9500), especially one that is running System 7.5.x. This is the total
amount of RAM before such additions as Virtual Memory or RAMDoubler. Power
Macintosh code, which much faster, consumes more memory than older 68xxx
code.

However, I also highly recommend to run either a small amount of virtual
memory (an additional 1MB will do) or RAMDoubler. The newer "native"
applications use those virtual memory schemes for their "paging", and thus
consume less application memory when Virtual Memory or RAMDoubler is
running. For example, ClarisWorks 4.0 consumes a whopping 1.6MB more
application memory without virtual memory.
