My interpretation, which has resulted in the registration of subdomains
accordingly, is that only one form need be legally registered, that's
enough to establish that the organization legally exists. The other
form may simply be an operational translation. I feel that's it's
perfectly reasonable that the "Smith Co." have a subdomain for their
French operating name for "Smith" if they're actually answering
their phone that way. While I've never been asked to test it, that
should theoretically even extend to an unregistered proprietorship.
Here's the relevent excerpt:
[...] The second exception is for an
organization whose legal name has both an English form and a French
form, and which wishes to apply for one CA subdomain corresponding to
each form.
What that means is that:
a/ An organization must have a legal name,
b/ They may represent the French and/or English form
of their legal name,
c/ They may register a CA subdomain for each
If I remember correctly, this concept has also in practice been
extended to include operating names in general, but please don't
hold me to that last point unless you twist both my arms into
looking up the precise example I'm trying to remember.
