It is really not hard to keep in sync.  Simplified example of what I use:

/usr/bin/lftp <<EOF
open ftp.isc.org
user anonymous mirror@davin.ottawa.on.ca
get /pub/usenet/CONFIG/active.gz -o /mirrors/isc.org/active.gz
EOF

cp /mirrors/isc.org/active.gz .
gzip -d active.gz
~news/bin/actsync -v 2 -i actsync.usenet ./active -o x -p 80

------------

where actsync.usenet contains something like:

i *
c comp.*
c misc.*
c news.*
c sci.*
c soc.*
c rec.*
c talk.*
c humanities.*
