Dear Colin and all readers:
I found your post quite interesting, as we have been debating adding a
cookie to our company website. We wanted to create a cookie that would
allow us to not display a certain pop up advertisement if the user had been
to our site before, as the pop up could get quite annoying.
However, due to the largely unfounded paranoia involving cookies, we
feared that users wouldn't be able to view our site if they had cookies
disabled, so we simply removed the pop-up, not exactly what we wanted to do,
but we were getting feedback that the pop up was annoying after the first
visit.
This is unfortunate as our pop up was for a free service that many
viewers of our page might enjoy, but in the assessment of cookie versus
annoyance, the ad lost out.
Your article points to the benign nature of cookies, and I wish that
more users would take the time to learn about them, as accepting cookies can
make web browsing a much more interesting experience.
