Well AOL's ownership of Netscape has now become apparent...

I downloaded Netscape 6 PR1, and my impressions are, yuck!!!

Graphic Interface almost cartoonish, with taskbars and other
tools stealing more of the desktop. They also have this very
annoying "sidebar" that pops out on the left side of the browser
window this takes 1/4 of the screen, fortunately you can minimize
it each time it opens.

Ok, more disappointments, from mouse click on icon to the full
screen 25 seconds on my system (Win98SE PC, 333 Mhz, 64 megs RAM)
versus 15 seconds for Netscape 4.72, and get this 5 seconds for
MSIE 5.01. Browser window is smaller, viewing a known site that
has an image 450 pixels high, will just fit a Netscape 4.x screen
and a MSIE screen (small icon, no text lables) Netscape 6 chops
about 1/4" off the image. Issues; I viewed several sites that
looked different in the version 6 vs. Netscape 3x, 4x, and MSIE,
it ignored the <center> tag in some pages, so a page that was
centered ended up left justified. I can't handle some types of
Java applets, it choked on FPhover. Yet another bookmarked page
that worked fine in all my previous browsers froze it solid, the
only thing that worked was my mouse even the three finger salute
didn't work... I had to hit the reset button.YIKES!!!

Yes I realize it was a Preview (PR1) release but do your self a
favour don't waste your time downloading it, oh ya another big
complaint, they copied MicroSoft with you just download the setup
package and it copies, and moves the files on-line. I prefer to
have a single file like the previous version, so if you need to
reinstall, it will only take a few minutes. Good news is the
uninstall will only take a few minutes!

Try View->Sidebar. Should make it go away for good.

You realize that MSIE is already running on your system? That would
account for why IE loads so fast (it's basically opening a new window,
that's it). As for 25 vs 15, that's odd. I know the Linux version
loads quicker than 4.72. I haven't had the chance to try the Windows
version yet.

Navigator 6 is more standards compliant then IE, 3.x or 4.x,
therefore you might be running into that. That's one of Netscape's main
goals with this release.

Netscape has always been more based on standards than IE.

One example of where this does not help on the win32 platform is in the way
Netscape handles MIME types. Netscape uses MIME types supplied from the server,
IE ignores MIME types. The end result, a Unix web server that has its MIME types
improperly configured causes Netscape to incorrectly download files in ASCII
mode rather than binary. IE just ignores that MIME type and downloads the file
in binary mode. Selecting Save as... does not help, the file will still download
incorrectly when using Netscape.

Standards are not always a good thing.

Yes, and regardless of the mime-type if I send a CSV file without a .csv
extension, then IE tries to render it directly rather than launching excel
properly like Netscape does.

I really hate the fact IE doesn't respect MIME types.

Netscape's support of W3C standards, such as HTML 4.0 and Cascading Style
Sheets, has been nothing short of pathetic. While Internet Explorer is also
by no means perfect, it has come much further than Netscape in this respect.

This is not a new problem -- Netscape has always insisted on introducing
proprietary tags, rather than sticking to the standards. Remember <BLINK>?
