Hi all,
First things first ... let me state clearly for the
record that Steve, I, and OzEmail generally are well
aware of the problems that OzEmail users in Canberra
have been having recently. The fundamental problem
is lack of sufficient bandwidth.
Steve Small has complained long and loud about this.
This is his right. I don't have any complaints about
people registering a complaint ... rather, I'd
absolutely encourage y'all to do do if there's a
problem that needs to be fixed.
That's one side of the story. I think it's also very
important to note the other side of things:
1) After Steve made his complaints in the ozemail.*
newsgroups, the problems were initially investigated
by myself. I determined, after discussions with
OzEmail's networking and provisioning team, that
lack of bandwidth was at fault. This information
was conveyed to Steve.
2) After further complaints, Steve received phone
calls from at least 2 individuals representing
OzEmail (one of whom was myself), explaining the
situation in more detail. At the very least, this
demonstrates an attitude of "caring for customers".
3) It has been clearly stated that OzEmail ordered
additional bandwidth from Telstra back in early
August. Up until last week they were unable to
provide a definite date for supply of this
bandwidth (i.e. additional DDS links). It is
important therefore to note that it is not
within the power of OzEmail to physically supply
this additional equipment.
I accept that there may be criticism of OzEmail for
having failed to anticipate the exponential growth
of traffic on their Canberra links. I don't however
accept the view (implied) that they are able to do
something about it but are choosing not to do so
(the motivation for which completely escapes me 8^).
I have continued to cross-post this to canb.general
because firstly, it's important for everyone to have
all the facts relevant to the situation, and then
secondly, it's important to note that OzEmail is
in no way trying to sweep this issue under the
carpet or avoid discussion of it in any way.
Hope this is helpful to y'all. I don't normally
read canb.general, but will subscribe to it now
for the next few weeks. I'm happy to take any
follow up questions if you have them.
Cheers
Steve
