Traffic question for anyone in the Buffalo area --
I'll be flying into the Buffalo NY airport on July 1, and must drive
from there to Woodstock Ontario. I'll be returning to Buffalo around
noon on July 4.
- How long does it typically take to drive thru customs?
(Are there long lines?)
- Are there any shortcuts to Canadian highway 401 from Buffalo?
I hope someone out there has this info -- as it will affect my plans.
If possible, please reply direct to Bob Cmar: bcmar@panix.com.
Thanks in advance.

As you know, July1-4 is a holiday weekend for both Americans and Canadians, so you can definitely expect significantly increased times to cross. It depends on what time of day you're crossing: two hour delays at heavy times are not un- common. To get to the 401 from Buffalo you have to travel on some secondary roads. I believe the most direct route would to take the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW - the only major highway on the Cdn. side) west heading to Toronto. After you pass Hamilton (ugly view of steel mills) you want to look for Highway 6 North, which will take you directly to the 401. Then head west. Highway 6 is an 80 km/hr road vs. the QEW and 401 which are 100 km roads so, again depending on traffic, it shouldn't take you too long. -- Lee R. To travel between the Niagara Region and _Woodstock_ (the destination the original poster mentioned), this is horribly out of the way. Instead, one should take the QEW to Burlington, then take Highway 403 (including the 30-odd km gap in the middle where it's just Highway 2) to its end at Highway 401... right to the outskirts of Woodstock. -- -- John R. Can I "cut the corner" near Burlington by taking Highway 20 from Hamilton to
53, then Highway 53 to the 403 in Brantford? Or are 20 & 53 congested?
Thanks again for the replies.

I would suggest getting off in Niagara Falls, and either taking the Rainbow Bridge, which is the easiest to get to, by taking the Niagara Falls Boulevard Exit and heading west right to the bridge,( the exit is right after leaving Grand Island), or to get to the bridge with the lightest traffic, take the exit for Robert Moses Expy right after you leave Niagara Falls going North (but before getting to to Lewiston), and going South to the Whirl Pool Bridge. Sometimes the traffic can be backed up all the way from customs on I 190 to this exit, so you can still be stuck, so the exit before that, New Hyde Park, will also take you in to town and you can chose between the Rainbow or Whirlpool bridge from signs on the way into town.
