Introduction
=-=-=-=-=-=-
On Saturday June 1, I'll be teaching an Accelerated Freefall (AFF) First Jump
Course (FJC). AFF is a method of skydiving instruction developed 15 years ago
to replace the traditional Military-inspired Static Line Progression. It
consists of 7 levels (1 Freefall Skydive per level) during which you learn the
basics of freefall safety, stability, and control , as well as those of
parachute packing, flight, and landing.

AFF FJC's are not offered often because of the limited supply of qualified
instructors. The certification process is expensive, time-consuming, and
challenging. If you have thought about learning to skydive, I hope you'll read
further. Another FJC will likely not be offered until mid-July or August.

On Level I, the student is accompanied by two certified jumpmasters (JMs) who
act like "training wheels" by maintaing harness grips while the student
performs practice pulls, altitude checks, and enjoys the view! The fall from
11500 from 4500 lasts about 40 seconds. The student deploys his own canopy
and, with radio assistance, glides it in to a soft landing.

Future skydives include turns, forward movement, backflips, solo exits, and
parachute packing. Once the student has met the objectives of all seven
levels, he has "graduated" from being a student, and can skydive without
direct supervision. 20 freefalls (total) are required before a license can be
issued.

AFF Level I is a full day course beginning at 8am, with the first jump taking
place in the late afternoon. The cost of the course is $250. Levels II and III
(which require 2 JM's) cost $135. Levels IV-VII cost $85. Post-graduation
jumps from 10500ft are $23. Levels II-VII require about an hour of training,
and are available every Saturday throughout the summer.

The training and jumps will take place at Allegheny Skydivers, a Drop Zone (DZ)
located near Kittaning, PA -- about 36 miles North East from CMU. This DZ has
been in business at this location for 7 years and trains hundreds of students
a year.
