MUSIC IN A GREAT SPACE presents The King of Instruments with organists John Walker and Donald Wilkins in the first concert on the new 105 rank Reuter pipe organ at Shadyside Presbyterian Church on Sunday, February 5 at 7:30 p.m. A reception in the Parish Hall will follow the concert. Tickets are $15 (students $7.50). Shadyside Presbyterian Church is located at the corner of Amberson Avenue and Westminster Place, just one block off Fifth Avenue in Shadyside. Free child care and on-street parking are available. More than 6,000 pipes make up the new instrument, with 105 ranks, 76 stops, four manuals and electro-pneumatic action. Organist John Walker describes the new four manual console as "luxurious," equipped with numerous electronic devices including a piston sequencer, MIDI interface, and pedal divide capability. Installation of the new instument began last August and initial installation was completed in mid-November. Final voicing of the instrument began in January under the direction of Franklin Mitchell, Tonal Director for the Reuter Organ Company of Lawrence, Kansas. Built in the "American Classic Design," the Shadyside instrument is intended to offer maximum versatility with a broad orchestral palette of sound. In contrast to some contemporary instruments which are built as replicas of 17th or 19th century instruments, the Shadyside instrument was designed for flexibility in a wide range of music. The program planned for February 5 will provide an opportunity to hear the instrument in music from the 16th through the 20th centuries, including Now Thank We All Our God and the Fantasy and Fugue in g minor by Johann Sebastian Bach; Heroic Music for trumpet and organ by Georg Phillip Telemann; Fantasy on "How Brightly Shines the Morning Star" by Max Reger, Canzona Noni Toni for two trumpets, two trombones and organ by Giovanni Gabrieli; Lord, Save Thy People for three trumpets, three trombones, organ and percussion by Charles-Marie Widor; Solemn Entry of the Knights of the Order of Saint John for organ and brass by Richard Strauss; Music for Space for two organs, three trumpets, and two trombones by Piet Kee; Rags by Scott Joplin for organ duo; and Charles Ives' Variations on "America." Donald Wilkins is Organist and Director of Music at Calvary Episcopal Church in Shadyside. John Walker is Organist and Director of Music at Shadyside Presbyterian Church. Both organists are Fellows of the American Guild of Organists, the highest honor the organization grants to its members. Host for the concert is WQED-FM's Paul Johnston.
