Don't use 7.1 updater on Mac/Palm CodeWarrior

OK, I just tried the following:

Install Mac 7.0
Merge Palm 8.0
Upgrade Mac 7.1

That process very nicely deletes the 68K compilers needed to do Palm
development. This is so broken it's not even funny.

I then tried this:

Install Mac 7.0
Upgrade Mac 7.1
Merge Palm 8.0

That's a no-go, since the Palm installer tries to upgrade the IDE from
7.0, can't since the IDE from 7.1 is newer, and bags out of the whole
install.

Is it safe to put the compilers back into a 7.1 install? What else does
the 7.1 upgrader delete that I might need? Note that the upgrader
doesn't move things to the trash -- it just deletes them.

A coworker suggested that CodeWarrior is getting out of the Palm
development business. I don't believe that, but situations like this
are very frustrating.

When might we expect a fix for this?

Thanks,
Lee

CodeWarrior is very committed to the Palm OS business. We've got
products based on Palm OS planned out through the end of this year. I
can't say anymore until PalmSource 2002 next month.

The problem here is that the 7.1 patch installer on Mac OS isn't very
smart about patching a merged product. In general, the Pro team doesn't
test merge installs at all, since there are so many products that could
be merged with Pro. I don't know why their installer kills the 68K
tools, its probably just careless.

We should support the 7.0 -> 7.1 -> merge Palm 8.0 order you tried
second. This does work fine on Windows, but the installer technology on
the Macintosh is a bit more touchy. What I'd suggest is to start with
Pro 7, install Palm 8 as a merge, do the 7.1 install, then manually
reinstall the 68K tools that the 7.1 patch deleted fro the V8 CD.

We're getting our 8.1 patch for the Macintosh ready right now, but we
had not planned on updating the IDE yet. Still, the Pro 7.1 IDE should
work with the Palm V8 tools.

The upgrade clearly states this is not for a Merge Version !! I don't
know if there will be an update for Palm 8 Mac or not.

What I would do for a merge is run the 7 install, run the 7.1 update
and install the Palm tools then copy but all the extra bits from the
Palm version to the 7.1 version.

I would however recommend that you run two installations. One for Palm
and one for Mac if both are needed.

Except for the fonts bug, I think most of 7.1 is for OS X it might not
be worth it to you to do that or to just update the IDE alone. (or save
the 4.6 IDE you have now and then do a clean CW7 and CW Palm 8 Merge and
replace the IDE only).

Metrowerks is the leading developer of Palm tools it is not getting out
of the Palm Development Business.

I'm sorry that you are frustrated but the release notes are quite clear
that this is not supported.

I did this, and it seems to be OK. Of course, I can't actually do a
complete build under Mac OS X, since PalmRez isn't carbonized. Anyone
have any news on that?

MWRon also replied, and I received a copy via email, but my news server
doesn't have the article yet. In it he says:

I don't see that anywhere clearly. The web page for the upgrade to 7.1
at
<http://www.metrowerks.com/download/index.taf?function=detail&updates_ui
d=292> says:

There's no list anywhere on the page. Later on the page,

> This update should only be applied to a CodeWarrior Pro 7.0 release.

Since I _have_ a CW Pro 7.0 release, I installed the update. My CW Pro
7.0 folder also had CW Palm 8.0 in it, from which the 7.1 update was
happy to remove the 68K compiler.

I don't think the web page is very clear, which is why I went ahead and
tried it.

Thanks for the rapid responses from Ben and Ron.

You aren't the first to be confused, so I'll ask that it be worded
differntly. But since there were none listed it implies that there is
none you can apply it too.

I understand your confusion, Ben had an excellent reply and I hope if
you follow his instructions you will be satisfied.

Palm has posted a beta version of the Carbonzied post-linker on their
developer site. You need to have signed up with their developer program
and returned the signed seeding confidentiality agreement to get access.
It will probably be released at PalmSource 2002 next month.
