Actually, the modem can go up to 460.8Kbps, and uses V.42b data compression

without compression, they would argue that there is little need to go
above 115.2

I don't think so.. modem vendors are familiar w/ V.42b, as they already
use it on analog devices, and have royalty arrangements agreed upon. A
ZyXEL Elite 2864I will connect to an IBM waverunner w/ V.42b (only other
known device to do this that I know of). Other serial based products
from other vendors will most likely jump on the bandwagon with future
products to offer similar compression.. which would logically require a
higher DTE speed.

LAN based products typically have chosen the hardware compression route,
by using STAC compression. this is easier for them, because all they
need to do is buy a chip, and route their data through it.

In the future, I would imagine you'll see a compromise of sorts between the
serial and network based vendors to use a compression scheme that both
negotiate.
