NEWSGOUPS YOU DON'T SEE ON MOST ISP SERVERS - groups.doc (00/12)

Greetings.

I have posted "groups.doc". This is a BIG FILE. 4.9 MEGS, 1192 PAGES.

The WORD DOC attachment I have just posted contains a list of 60,000
newsgroups topics. I came across it on URL shown below.
I have access to Primenets and Earthlink News groups servers. I
usually get some 33,000 newsgroups topics on either one of the
News servers.
http://www.alibis.com/news/

Make no mistake that some of the NEWSGROUPS in the list can ONLY
BE ACCESS when connected to that ISP'S news servers.

EXAMPLE:
When connected to Primenet, I can post and read data on
"primenet.general" that Primenet users can see but no one else on
other news servers.

Some companys have there own FIREWALLED news server just to be used
within there INTRANET. I have notice one Phoenix company is listed on
the doc file. (I would like to know how they can see that
information?)

Something to look at.

See, those of us using tin don't have that problem. It doesn't even
recognize that a file was ever attached.

...which is why I maintain my stance that a unix proficiency test should
be required in order to gain any Internet access. And why tin and lynx
will rule foreer.

While users of MT-NewsWatcher note that there's a binary attached, but
it's not downloaded from the server unless requested...

I use lynx a *lot* in the course of a day, but I've mostly given up on tin
- there are *better* newsreaders available. tin's got it's good points,
but with MT-NewsWatcher I can download and read multiple newsgroups and
threads simultaneously (read one newsgroup's messages while downloading
another set, download a newsgroups headers without getting the messages,
grab binaries if I need 'em while reading other newgroups, etc. The MT in
the name indicates "multi-threaded.") The filtering (regexp-based!) is
nice, too.

I don't necessarily agree with a *UNIX* proficiency test, but a basic
understanding of why it's really *stupid* to upload binaries in non-binary
groups, general network architecture, general (basic) security for
whatever platform they're using, etc. There should be a question on the
test as to why it's stupid to reply to a spammer, too.

I've been having fun for the last few weeks tracking down the script
kiddies who keep scanning various networks for NetBus or Back Orifice
servers. Don't they have anything better to do?

Regardless of the phrasing of his article, it appears he probably just
"posted" it on the web page whose URL was in his message.

Since there was no file attached, you're giving credit where there was none
due. :-)

I haven't checked, but I assume he "posted" his huge document at his website,
URL included in his article.

They might simply know. Or, more likely than not, someone cross-posted
an article to both internal and external newsgroups. In this case, the
news server may have propagated the article to the outside world because
at least one of those groups was supposed to propagate.

Articles are normally distributed or propagated as long as one of the
newsgroups is carried at a given site, or as long as one of the newsgroups
propagates. You'll see this all the time, especially from colleges.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but I don't understand why abuse and
postmaster@globalcenter.net would care about his response to your initial
post. If anything, abuse should reprimand you for posting a binary file
to non-binaries newsgroups in the first place.

Drew.

I doubt that the webmaster at GC really cares, and his remarks,
(Dennis) were right on the mark. The only abuse I saw was on your
part. Posting such a large and pointless post was absolutely uncalled
for.

If you are dealing with this via abuse@globalcenter.net, it is a
private matter. I don't see why you think any of us even care.

Why don't you cancel your original posting, since it isn't even accurate?

Follow-ups welcome in /dev/null.

Not only did you post a huge binary file to a non-binary newsgroup, you
crossposted it to FOUR non-binary newsgroups.

I was willing to excuse your ignorance, but your followup clearly shows
you didn't get the point.

Dennis's remarks may have been rude, but there's no policy against
rudeness in the AUP at FGC/Primenet. However, there IS a policy against
posting inappropriate binary files to non-binary groups and excessive
crossposting.

You are the person who is in danger from the abuse department, not Dennis.

It is rumored that Kennedy crashed his plane trying to get away from a
plane full of paparazzi. Also it is unclear, but Edward may have been
driving. He showed up at a local bar, his suit was soaked in salt
water. He kept muttering, "I am a good driver, it's not my fault."

Stay tuned for more details.

Steve, you gibbering maniac, get this through your skull: Posting a
multimegabyte file where you bid brands you as a moron of the first order.
Now strap your sleeves back around yourself, and go take a nice nap.

Your (horribly long, pointless, and foolish) post (made to
inappropriate newsgroups) WAS abuse. Remarks made by Dennis (and
others) were NOT.

Hint: Just forget about the whole thing, and after some time passes,
people will forget about your foolishness. If you keep ranting about
it, you are making more of a fool of yourself, and it will take longer
for people to forget. Ranting will also cause people to make more
remarks that seem to hurt your feelings.
