CD lens cleaners?

Has anyone tried cleaning the lens of their CD player with the special disks
that you can buy in hi-fi shops?  Did it make any difference?  Would you
recommend them?  I'm conidering buying one (with a group of friends), and
I'd prefer not to spend the money if they aren't any good.
