POP from appliances

I hope this is not a FAQ, but I have 2 sources of pops which go through
my stereo system.

(1) If my speaker select buttons are engaged (speakers A and B are "on")
when I power up my system, I very often get a "POP" through the speakers.
I deal with this by not engaging the speakers until the system is fully
    powered up.

(2) I get "POP"'s when appliances such as the compressor motor on the
refridgerator kicks in that go through the speakers. What is required
here ? Possibly some kind of surge capacitor to filter out this low
frequency "noise" ? Is there just a commercial product ?

I am running a modest 80 W Yamaha Natural Sound Integrated Amp driving
4 speakers (BA & Infinity). Any help is appreciated.
