Who can tell me where to get a hand held wind speed
detector. I have seen a few on the slopes, but have
not been able to find out where they come from.

Tx

There is one in the Hobby Lobby catalog for around $16.00, I think.
Look for their ad in one of the magazines to get their phone number
or call information for Nashville, TN (they don't have a 1-800 type
    number).

Swatch, the big swiss watch-maker (big in Europe, anyway.
Makes those cheap plastic watches in color) has a new digital
wind speed meter. It fits your palm, has a small propeller
(10mm in diameter) and a LCD display. Quite expensive,
unfortunately. (around $100 here in Finland,if I recall right.
I may try to find out more, if you are interested).

To add another angle to the question: does anyone know of a wind speed detector
that estimates the amount of lift (based on up angle and speed, I suppose) at a
slope?

BTW, I've found that my slope plane itself makes a very responsive wind direction
indicator. I hold it vertically, nose down in the palm of one hand, with the other
hand loosely encircling the fuse. The wings continually adjust to position
themselves perpendicular to the wind.

Try at any sailing or boating store. They should have one for you or should be
able to get one. I'll guess $50.00 or so but don't quote me.

Enjoy . . . Dave

Find a kite shop and ask there. There are a few in the San Francisco
Bay area.

There a few types that are popular on the kite field. They range in
price from $15 for the Dwyer to over a $100 for the digital readout
types.

I don't know exactly who makes them, but the best place I know of to
get one is a windsurf shop. (I'm a boardsailor, too) If your net
address is any indication, you're in the East Bay area in CA... If so,
you can go to one of several great windsurfing stores over there, or
come to the peninsula - several good ones here, too.

I've seen ultralights with a simple airspeed indicator mounted
to a wing strut, in the free-stream, but where the pilot can see
it. The construction is a clear plastic vertical column, about six
or eight inches long with a 'pitot' inlet at the bottom, and 'static
port' at the top.

A 'pith-ball' (or whatever weight is required to float in the
updraft) rides in the vertical section, which is slightly tapered.

Since they're used for ultralights they're typically calibrated
for fairly low speed (as man-carrying aircraft go), like 0 to 75 mph.
I have no idea how accurate they are at the low end of the scale.

Anyway, it would seem like one of these would be far cheaper and
far more rugged than one of the ones with the whirling cups on the
shaft. I expect you could just stuff it in your back pocket, between
readings...

I'll look in one of my 'pilot' catalogs when I get home and
see if they carry 'em and at what price.

Found two mail-order sources, Hobby Lobby (someone already
mentioned) and Sporty's Pilot Shop... Sportys is a tad cheaper,
especially if you consider the WATS line to call in the order there,
and each order to Sportys gets you entered for their annual
(man-carrying) airplane give-away.

Probably the decider is which companys catalog subscription
list you want most to get entered on.

    Benton.Holzwarth@tek.com

Hobby Lobbys description (it appears to be the same item at
both places):

About 6" long. Hand-held device has two scales: 2 to 10 mph
and 4 to 66 mph.

Hobby Lobby item: WID001 Wind Meter
5614 Franklin Pike Circle $14.00 + $4.90 shipping
Brentwood, TN 37027

(This is last years Hobby Lobby catalog I'm reading, I hope the
prices haven't changed...)

    or

Sporty's Pilot Shop item: 7763A Dwyer Wind Meter
Clermont County Airport $13.90 + 4.75 shipping
Batavia, OH 45103-9747
