Farmer's Market

The weather being unseasonally warm, many late summer items are
still available. The quality, amounts, and prices are changing. For
example, you can still buy tomatoes. I've seen some melons still
available. Don't expect these things to taste as they would in the
height of summer, but they're still available.

The root vegetables are coming in - the potatoes, yams, sweet
potatoes. Winter squashes are abundant. Many a stand has daikon radish,
cabbage, carrots, broccoli.

Prices on apple persimmons have come down. I saw most of them
priced at 40 cents a pound. Satsuma mandarins are showing up. These are
my favorite. Right now, prices are $1 to $1.20 per pound; they may go
down a bit, but probably not by much.

At the Sunday market under the W-X Freeway in Sacramento, one
vendor is selling beautiful wreaths priced from $4 to $36.

Grapes are abundant and usually priced at about 80 cents a pound.

One of the growers has raspberries, yes, raspberries. He had
both golden ones and a more traditional one. They are not inexpensive,
$2.50 per pint but they are delicious. this grower is over in the
"annex" and also has beautiful chestnuts graded by size, so-so looking
pomogranates, and materials with which tomake your own wreaths. His
berries are organically grown with no pesticides. Well worth the
splurge. They'd make a lovely fruit salad with mandarin orange slices
and chunks of fuji apple.

Yours, Susan
