Arbat - Russian deli

On our way to the Hmong New Year Festival, we had to drive the
length of Watt Avenue North. This takes one past McClellan, the air base
which was just closed. Right across the street from the gate to
McClellan at Peacemaker Way (yes, honest to god, that's the name of the
street into the base) is, in some sort of ironic justice, a Russian deli.

This is the only Russian deli I've found so far in Sacramento.
The address is Arbat, 5500 Watt Avenu, North Highlands, CA 95660,
916-332-7120.

The shop is small, dark and crowded. My husband said it was
European style (he lived in Germany and Denmark for 14 years). He
thought it was dirty. I was, of course, charmed by the authenticity and
funk. Is the glass half empty or half full?

They have basturma, and for a dollar less a pound than David
Berkeley (who, thank you, just started carrying basturma in response to
my pleas) or $7 a pound. They have hungarian salami as well as numerous
other Russian and central european type cured meats and sausages. They
had smoked white fish and similar items. In the dairy case was a berry
drink in a box (like the one Rice Dream comes in) sweetened with Equal.
I guess even Russians have to watch their weight. They had farmer's
cheese, cream cheese, and some other soft white cheeses with which I'm
not familiar.

They had refrigerated pickles as well as other pickles which are
stable at room temperature (all commercially produced). They had the
entire line of Pompadour teas as well as many teas with labels in
Cyrillic. There were canned goods of various types. They had fresh
cabbage and pickling cucumbers. The prices seemed quite reasonable.

All in all, a place to add to the list for food exotica.....

Yours, Susan
