More than 26,000 poor in California could lose housing help, group says. By Andy Furillo -- Bee Staff Writer Published 2:15 a.m. PDT Saturday, July 12, 2003 An estimated 184,000 people across the country face losing their federal housing subsidies as a result of a budgeting miscalculation by the Bush administration, according to a report released Friday in Washington by an advocacy group for the poor. The reduction would be unprecedented in the 29-year history of the Section 8 housing subsidy program, said the report by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities. "For many of these people, they won't be able to make ends meet," said Will Fischer, a low-income housing policy analyst for the center and a co-author of the report. "For the elderly and disabled folks who make up 40 percent of the caseload, it means they won't be able to live independently. It means they will have to move into an institutional setting or be at risk of homelessness." More than 26,000 Californians on Section 8 would lose their subsidies as a result of the shortfall, according to the CBPP. No figures were available for the Sacramento region. == Great. Free housing for drug addicts, migrant workers, and the nigra.
