I use Institute for Global Communications (www.igc.apc.org),
a2i communications (rahul.net), and Ricochet.
All work fine with Linux PPP. None offers ISDN.
IGC is cheap for light users, great hand-holding for newbies, and a
bunch of nice proprietary newsgroups for "progressives." I'd send
Grandma there instead of Worldnet or AOL or something. Customer
support can be condescending and will not give you credit for knowing
what you're doing. $50 setup fee for a shell.
Ricochet is slow and expensive, uses a proprietary radio network
instead of modems. Good tech support. I told them I would be using
Linux and they actually *called me back* to see how I was doing when
I didn't get around to trying it for a couple of days!
They were savvy enough to know Linux capability would be a good thing
to offer.
The radio modems have a backdoor where tech support can help you debug
a chat script ("You didn't send a control-m, try sending a control-m
there"), but that means they can see everything. PPP only, no shell.
Rahul.net is for technical professionals. No hand-holding, you're
responsible for your end of the wire, but everything works and they
are very open about what's going on. You can run daemons and cron
jobs, compile your own shell, whatever. I'd send Linus there if
they had ISDN. Our hero should not be on the wrong end of a slow
link.
