I have been asked to investigate whether hardwood logs stored outdoor
can be protected from degrade by a continuous spray of tidal water of
high salinity. The log storage area is located in Tanjong Manis,
Sarawak. The area has high marine borers activity Does anyone know
whether marine borers can attack logs stored above ground when there
is a continous spray of salt water ?
The logs are expected to be stored for a period of 6 months. The water
temperature is expected to be around 28 degree centigrade. The spray
noozle is expected to be around 2 mm diameter. A 6 months field study
using 15 logs for each treatment to compare fresh water, salt water, 2
insecticides, 2 fungicides and 2 wood preservatives against control is
expected to commence within 1 month. Choice of chemicals has not been
determined. The study team will consist of 2 foresters/ timber
technologists, 1 mechaDate: Fri, 22 Sep 1995 22:59:31 +0800
