Does anyone know if there is a mold, mildew or "related" bacteria that can emit a potentially unhealthy gas which is strong enough to discolour carpet? Let me explain. I just moved into a townhouse. There is an unsightly discoloration of the carpet (about 2'x4' area) and I was given the impression when I moved in that the carpet would be replaced. Instead the landlord suggested I have a company come and clean the carpet. I had a company come to clean it, but the discoloration did not come out. So, I pulled back the carpet (it was loose) and discovered the back of the carpet was black and some of the wood underneath was rotten. One person I talked to about it said a mold or mildew had gotten into the carpet and was releasing a gas that was discoloring the carpet. They also suggested that the gas was a potential health risk. Needless to say, I find that suggestion quite worrisome, but before I go hysterical I'd rather get an expert opinion on: 1) Is such a gas even a possibility from a carpet infestation? 2) If so, what are the possible organisms and potential health risks? (And do these organisms exist in the province of Ontario, Canada) 3) If so, who could I get to assess the situation from the Kitchener-Waterloo (near Toronto, Ontario, Canada) area? Obviously, I am completely ignorant when it comes to what kinds of molds, mildews, etc. are around, so if the possibility is completely ridiculous, please tell me. I'm not going to lose sleep over it until I find out whether it's even a possibility. Please send responses by email to: drmadill@kingcong.uwaterloo.ca Thanks for any assistance, Dan Madill
