Less change in my neck of the Ozark woods. The land is too steep for the kind of large contiguous tracts agribusiness likes. Its *all* small family farms. Mostly growing hay for cattle. Some chicken contracts for Tyson. But just about everybody has gardens they raise food to feed their kids on rather than use fastfood or junkfood. There is *no* MacDonald's in Searcy county. Nor are there junkfood or candy machines in the schools. And when you surf the Arkansas Dept of Education, and look at the academic test scores from these small hill towns like Marshall, Leslie, Alread, St. Joe, Witt Springs, Jasper, Hector, or Searcy, Newton, Pope, Carrol, Madison, Van Buren, counties, what you see are classes that *AVERAGE* at the 65th percentile. When my son graduated from Leslie, 25% of the class scored above the 90th percentile. I've seen one website extolling the virtues of small schools like this, with less than a few hundred kids. But you think the millions of people in America would notice where the schools actually work, and try to figure out why that is. My kids, these kids, actually get outside and work. Now there's plenty of data to show how its good for mental development. It'd work for the Mexicans too, but you also need a good diet. I was born on a farm in Minnesota. We fed the horses oats cause we wanted strong smart horses. We fed the pigs corn cause we wanted stupid fat pigs. If I wanted stupid fat kids, I'd raise them on soulfood or a Latin diet with lotsa corn.
