Not sure - but if it's in an everyday/ transaction type bank account
earning 0.1% it's pretty easy to understand. In an internet account
though at 5.4% or so it's not so bad, and not that much lower than
Bonds are yielding at the moment.

Cash's obvious advantage to offset it's general lower returns is it's
reliable liquidity. It's not a bad idea to have 3 to (preferably) 6
months living expenses in cash before you get too involved in starting
a portfolio. That way you are less prone to panic/ sleep easier in a
market downturn, likewise you can ride things out more comfortably in
the event of a downturn in your "human capital" due to illness or
unemployment.
