    Use the 74HCT595 to convert serial data from the PIC to parallel out data.
Yes, it is slow, but it does work.  I use this method all the time.
    To get parallel data back to serial format, use the 74HCT597, the "cousin"
of the '595.  These two devices will do exactly what you want.
