Audio Spectrum Analyzer

Forgive me if I've selected the wrong newsgoups.. they looked promising!

In any event, here's my problem: A few years ago a friend of mine built
a board for his PET (don't laugh) to take the audio input from his
stereo, break it up into bands, run that through A-D converters and
pass that digital information to his computer, where he had written
software to do a very nice spectrum analyzer display, like the ones
you get with those $125 Radio Shack equalizers nowadays.

Anyway, I'd like to reconstruct this, but now, have it output the data
via standard centronics parallel for input to a PC or Amiga. What I'm
hoping that someone has an application-specific IC to aid in this, or
at worst that someone knows where I could find schematics for a
project similar. I guess it's like those 3-light light organs you
built in shop class, or a few steps above, so it couldn't be _that_
bad (I'm a software person :-)

I only need about 4 or 5 bits of resolution, in maybe 8 or 12 bands,
so I don't need one of those $500, 20-bit pre-made systems they sell.

If you can give me any pointers, direction to an ASIC, or schematics,
please email me! Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Dave
