By the way, I did a calculation some years ago about what could be done with the daily trash of a few hundred million Americans. Calculating how many pounds per year per person, factoring in how much it costs--as a basis for calculation--to ship a 2500-pound car the average distance, my conclusion was that all of the trash in the U.S. could be economically shipped to the Meteor Crater in Arizona and dumped in. The level would rise by about a meter per year. No ground water below it. Out in the desert. The trash can just compact and compact and sit. Should be good for a hundred years. Maybe by then there will be another meteor crater to fill. If the Meteor Crater is too valuable a national asset to fill, can backfill some of those huge copper mines out west. Or coal digs. And there is no reason to transport it _all_ to one site. I did that calculation just to show it was economically and technically feasible. This says that waste disposal, supposedly one of our "pressing" problems, is not such a big deal at all, were people to think outside the box. --Tim May -- Timothy C.
