FFT's. Help with Region Segmentation

I am currently working on a problem to segment raster scanned topographic
maps, and one of the stages is texture segmentation.

There seems to be a couple of methods:

1) Histogram Window Signatures, compare normalised histograms in a small area
2) FFT based.

The question is:

How do you calculate the FFT of a 2-D image? I assume you calculate the FFT
of the row/col of the element (pixel) you are working with.

BUT how do they display this as an intensity diagram? An FFT creates a freq.
breakdown, how do you display this as a single intensity???

Can anyone help with FFT's? Suggestions?
