I had an early CCD camera. One way to expand the dynamic range is to take two images, each at different iris settings (or, with radiographs, different intensities on the light box). The resulting images can be combined if you know the shape of the H+d curve (relating optical density to exposure nominally, but can be thought of as a characteristic curve relating density to intensity on the CCD). This is tricky, but has been done. The characteristic curve for this can be measured by taking both images using a standard "step wedge" from Kodak James Balter james@rover.bsd.uchicago.edu "If the hat fits, slice it!"
