I don't have the exact reference handy right now, but there was a paper
on exactly that topic in the new journal "Experimental Astronomy"
sometime last year, in the second or third issue.

See also "An Algorithm To Smooth And Find Objects In Astronomical
Images", Lea & Kellar, Astronomical Journal v97, p1238 (1989).  It's not
about compression, but it has a nice intro to the technique.
