If ERDAS can do what you need it to do, go with it. We use
EASI/PACE (on Suns, and formerly on a VMS system), and it's a
little shaky in several areas. They seem to have the basics
down, but have had trouble extending the basics into different
areas, e.g. handling non-8-bit images, map reprojections, etc.
If you do go with PCI, make darn sure it can do what you need
it to do *now*, and be leery of promised capabilities. It's
been over two years since the we bought it, and it still can't
do what was promised in the December of '90 release.
