Looking for "classic" edge-detection algorithms

I am looking for pubically available software to do
edge detection of fixed sized 2-D images.
I am researching methods of improving the behavior
of real-time applications and I am not familiar
with the various algorithms that are available.
Does anyone know of where I could obtain an
edge-detection package that is a "benchmark"
of sorts, or very well known?

Thanks in advance,
