In their paper "Multisensor data fusion of laser radar and forward looking
infrared (FLIR) for target segmentation and enhancement", (SPIE Vol. 782,
1987) Tong et al., in discussing methods of threshold selection for
segmentation, write:
" ... classical estimates such as Neyman-Pearson, maximum posteriori, minimax
and maximum likelihood ... ".

If anyone could give me some pointers to references, hints or ideas about any
of these methods of threshold selection I would be very grateful.

You might take a look at the following:
Sieracki, ME, SE Reichenbach, KL Webb. 1989. An evaluation of automated threshold selection
methods for accuratel sizing microscopic fluorescent cells by image analysis. Applied and
Environmental Microbiology 55:2762-2772.

It's in a wierd place (the first author is a marine scientist, the second author is
on the CS faculty at Nebraska-Lincoln), but you might find it helpful.
