Using colour, lines, shading or any visual effect, you can even indicate 'that part of the palm within 2 cm of the base of the index finger', for which, AFAIK, there is no single word in any language. I see a difference between 'pictographic' and 'symbolic'. What I mean by the former is quasi-realistic representation of objects etc., as in a strip-cartoon, whereas 'symbolic' implies a stylization, as you see on the controls of a car or icons on a computer display. -- Regards, John Woodgate, OOO - Own Opinions Only.
