Stephen Lau wrote: This "The" business is most likely limited to the Los Angeles Basin and surrounding environs. Interestingly, people here in Ontario (Canada, that is, not the one in southern California) routinely put "the" in front of highway numbers too. For example, the main east/west freeway that goes through Toronto (Highway 401) is "the four-oh-one". And a stretch of freeway through Kitchener (60 miles west of Toronto), which officially belongs to both Highway 7 and Highway 8, is universally called "the seven-and-eight". BTW, I grew up in the Bay Area, and later lived in Los Angeles for many years. I can attest to just about everything that's been said on this thread, but I must confess I never really noticed the "the" thing until my mom (who lives in San Mateo) chided me once for talking about "the 280" as if it were an L.A. freeway. -- Rich Wales // RichW@mks.com // +1 (519) 884-2251 // VE3HKZ, WA6SGA Mortice Kern Systems, 35 King St. N., Waterloo, Ontario, Canada N2J 2W9
