Actually, when I moved from Montreal to Los Angeles in 1977, I was
amazed at how courteous California drivers were. In Montreal nobody
would dare to cross a major street except at a traffic light -- and
even then you had to be cautious. In L.A., cars would stop right away
as soon as I stepped off the sidewalk. Also, in Montreal it was torture
to merge onto an expressway during rush hour. In Los Angeles, they
actually let you enter without much difficulty. Of course, things may
be different nowadays -- I left L.A. in 1984, except for occasional
visits. But I must say that even when I go back nowadays the drivers
seem reasonable -- it's the traffic that's gotten way out of hand.

In my experience, the North American city with the worst drivers is
Boston.
