Maybe a mile >or so later, there was another "End Freeway" sign. Here's the question: what's >the road called for the stretch of the 101 in Ventura County that's _not_ >freeway? Ventura Highway, or Expressway, or Freeway, or what? I'm assuming >that the "Begin Ventura Freeway" sign was the end of the Cabrillo Highway/ >Freeway/Whatever. This is anecdotal, but here goes: Roughly speaking, a freeway is a high-speed, limited access roadway. Limited access means no crossroads, parking, and travel is restricted to vehicles that can maintain speeds > 45 mph (yep, the CHP cites folks going too slowly). Older on-ramps still have posted signs reading "PEDESTRIANS, BICYCLES, MOTOR-DRIVEN CYCLES PROHIBITED". Between Santa Barbara and Ventura, stretches of the road are the ONLY way to get between points, so I think the State relaxes vehicle restrictions; consequently, the highway is no longer a freeway and cyclists cannot get ticketed for riding it. North of S.B., cross roads intersect the 101. About 1/4 mile before each crossroad, signs mark "END FREEWAY"; a quarter mile after the exit, another sign bearing "BEGIN FREEWAY" appears. When a freeway isn't a freeway, it's a highway. Anyone have a clarification? :Karl
