I've seen slashes used for emphasis in at least one ng (sci.bio.evolution?), whether it specifically means italics for them I don't know. In Linguistics, of course, the slashes are already spoken for to delimit phonemic transcription, so you wouldn't expect it to be the convention in sci.lang, though an outsider couldn't be expected to know that. Outside of sci.lang I've also seen the underscore used to delimit italics in genus and species names (or other Latin biological classifications). The point is, different newsgroups have different conventions, and most of the ones I read don't use /.../ for italics. -- Dave Timpe davetimpe at cybrzn dot com -- Dave Timpe davetimpe at cybrzn dot com
